St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 6, 2017 — Washington University in St. Louis had six student-athletes honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced by the Association on Monday.
Junior Darcy Cunningham and sophomore Hannah Menard of the No. 6-ranked women's soccer team, sophomore Paige Lawler of the No. 7 women's cross country team, sophomore Zoe Baxter and junior Julianne Malek of the No. 19 volleyball team and freshman Seth Ritter of the No. 6 men's swimming and diving team each earned the honor.
Cunningham had a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win at No. 1 University of Chicago Saturday. She tied the game with a goal from outside the box at 67:10, and then assisted on the game-winning tally 41 seconds later.
Menard and the WashU defense limited No. 1 Chicago to a season-low nine shots in the 2-1 win Saturday. The Maroons entered the contest averaging 3.67 goals and 24.7 shots per game, both tops in the league.
Lawler claimed first at the North Central Red & White Open by outracing the runner-up by more than 40 seconds with a time of 17:12.3. She helped the WashU women to a first-place finish on the three-mile course.
Baxter led the Bears to a 4-0 week and their 22nd UAA Title in program history. She finished the week with 63 digs and 11 assists. Baxter averaged 4.85 digs per set and totaled 21 digs in a 3-1 win over No. 7 Emory University in the UAA Championship match.
Malek recorded a .507 hitting percentage while averaging 3.00 kills per set in four matches. She totaled 39 kills, 14 blocks, nine digs, four assists and three aces. In a 3-1 win over No. 7 Emory, Malek recorded 14 kills and a .542 hitting percentage.
Ritter captured first in the 1,650 (15:55.71) and 500 (4:39.53) in the Bears' 180-108 dual meet victory at Chicago. In the first 1,650 of the season, Ritter posted a "B" cut time, a mark that leads NCAA Division III.
