WashU Honored with Four UAA Athletes of the Week

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 11, 2017 — Washington University in St. Louis had four student-athletes honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced by the Association.

Sophomore Taylor Cohen and senior Kelly Von Zup of the No. 1-ranked women's soccer team, sophomore Jarrod Huther of the football team and junior Julianne Malek of the No. 8-ranked volleyball team each earned the accolade.

Cohen, who earned the honor for the second-straight week, recorded a pair of multi-goal games as won three home games last week. She had two goals in a 3-1 win over No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, and then followed that up with a pair of tallies in a 5-0 victory over previously unbeaten Millikin University on Sunday.

Von Zup anchored the WashU defense that allowed one goal and posted a pair of shutouts last week during three victories. WashU did not allow a shot in the 2-0 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Thursday. The Bears' backline limited opponents to just 11 shots and six shots on goal in the three wins.

Huther made a career-high 16 tackles in the Bears' 28-12 victory over the University of Chicago Saturday at home. He also added 1.5 tackles for loss and half of a sack. The Bears defense held strong limiting Chicago to 281 yards of total offense and 12 points despite committing nine turnovers.

Malek averaged 2.87 kills per set with an overall hitting percentage of .463 in five matches last week. She posted 66 kills, 12 service aces, 13 digs and eight blocks. Malek reached 15 kills in matches twice this week, including a 3-1 victory over Lawrence University with a .619 hitting percentage. In the final match of the week, she posted 11 kills without a single error in a 3-1 win over St. Norbert College. Malek was named to the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic All-Tournament team.
