St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 5, 2017 — Washington University in St. Louis had three student-athletes honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, as announced by the Association.
Sophomore Taylor Cohen of the No. 1-ranked women's soccer team, sophomore Samantha Haubenstock of the women's golf team and junior Julianne Malek of the No. 8-ranked volleyball team each earned the accolade.
Cohen had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 season-opening win at DePauw University on Friday. She scored the first goal for the Bears in the 32nd minute, and then assisted on the game-winning goal in the 37th minute. Cohen added an insurance goal in the 60th minute.
Haubenstock earned All-Tournament and medalist honors at the William Woods dual over the weekend by tying a career-best three-under par 69. The 18-hole round is tied for the second-lowest mark in school history. Haubenstock finished five strokes ahead of the runner-up from William Woods.
Malek guided the Bears to a 2-1 record over the weekend, posting 34 kills and a .542 hitting percentage. She committed just two errors in 10 sets of play while also contributing 16 total blocks and 10 digs. Malek was at her best in WashU's 3-1 loss to Cornell College registering 13 kills, zero errors, a .591 hitting percentage, eight total blocks and five digs. For her efforts Malek was named to the Bear Invitational All-Tournament team.
