St. Louis, Mo., April 21, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team will be honoring Director of Athletics John Schael with "John Schael Day" when Washington U. takes on Principia College Thursday, April 24, at the WU Softball Field. Game one is set for 4 p.m.
Schael announced in January that he would retire after leading the Washington University Department of Athletics for 36 years. His final day as Director of Athletics will be June 30, 2014. As part of softball’s recognition Thursday, Schael will throw out the first pitch prior to the Bears' first game of its doubleheader against Principia and will also receive a special gift from the team.
During Schael's 36 years at Washington University, the Bears athletic programs have won 19 NCAA Division III National Championships, 166 University Athletic Association (UAA) titles, and made 176 NCAA appearances. The Washington University teams during his tenure have compiled a 70.4 winning percentage and amassed more than 5,600 wins. Under Schael's direction, Washington University has also finished in the top-10 in the Learfield Director's Cup standings in each of the last 11 years.
Schael was instrumental in the addition of softball as Washington U.’s 18th varsity sport in 2000. The Bears have compiled an overall record of 456-172 (.726) in 15 seasons, winning eight UAA championships and making 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bears made their lone appearance in the College World Series in 2007, finishing second.
