St. Louis, Mo., April 8, 2014 – Washington University in St. Louis juniors Troy Makous and Dom Quaranta were each selected as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for their respective sports, as announced by the Association.
Makous was named the UAA Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career after winning the pole vault at the Greenville College Select Meet April 5. He cleared an outdoor career-best height of 4.75 meters to win the event, vaulting 10 centimeters better than his previous outdoor best. The mark for Makous ranks ninth in NCAA Division III this season and is tied for third on Washington University’s outdoor career list.
Quaranta was selected as the UAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season and third time in his career after throwing 10 shutout innings in two games last week. He pitched a complete-game shutout in Washington U.’s 3-0 win over Spalding University April 1. Quaranta allowed just five hits, while recording a season-high five strikeouts in the victory. He also pitched a scoreless ninth inning in the Bears’ 12-1 win over the University of Chicago April 6. Quaranta recorded two strikeouts in the inning to bring his season total to 15.
