#1 - John Schael retires after 36 years as Director of Athletics
St. Louis, Mo., July 31, 2014 – After 36 years of leading the Washington University in St. Louis Department of Athletics, John Schael announced he would be retiring at the conclusion of the 2013-14 school year. Schael’s final day as Director of Athletics was June 30.
The 2000 and 2008 Division III Central Region winner of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) award, Schael helped orchestrate the Bears' athletics transformation into one of the top departments in Division III. Since his arrival in 1978, Washington U. totaled 182 NCAA appearances, 169 University Athletic Association (UAA) titles, and 19 national championships. On Jan. 26, 2007, Schael was inducted into the Washington University Sports Hall of Fame.
