No. 11 Washington University Women’s Tennis Receives At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament

St. Louis, Mo., May 7, 2012 — The No. 11-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team will travel to Chicago, Ill., to compete in the Central Regional of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 11-13, at Stagg Field Courts.
The Bears, who are making their fifth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, received one of eight at-large bids to the tournament after finishing third at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on April 29 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Washington University is making its 13th NCAA appearance. The Bears have an all-time record of 7-12 in the tournament.
Washington U. (15-7) and second-ranked University of Chicago (19-4) both received opening-round byes as the top two seeds in the regional. No. 21-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (21-4) takes on Wisconsin Lutheran College (17-10) in a first-round match on Friday, with the winner facing Washington U. at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Chicago will face the winner of Friday’s second opening-round match between Grinnell College (19-3) and Carleton College (18-5).
Four UAA teams were selected for the NCAA Championship. Chicago received the automatic bid as the conference champion. Carnegie Mellon University and Emory University also received at-large bids, and received first-round byes as the top seeds in their respective regions. Emory will host regional play in Atlanta, Ga., while Carnegie Mellon travels to Greencastle, Ind., to play in the regional hosted by DePauw University.
Meredith College and the Town of Cary will host the team championship finals, which will be held May 21-23 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 9.
