Kate Klein Falls in Opening Round of NCAA Singles Tournament
Fredericksburg, Va., May 28, 2010 – Freshman Kate Klein of the No. 21 Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team fell in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division III singles championship on Friday, May 28, at the Battleground Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, Va.
Klein, who was the seventh student-athlete in program history selected to compete in the 32-player NCAA singles championship, lost 6-2, 6-2, to the tournament’s No. 5 seed, Zahra Dawson of Emory University.
Named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Rookie of the Year on Thursday evening, Klein ends her freshman campaign with a 22-7 record in singles play.
Earlier this month she helped the WUSTL women’s tennis team advance to the regional final of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and conference champion University of Chicago, 5-0. The Bears finished the year with a 14-6 record and earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row.
