St. Louis, Mo., May 2, 2013 — Washington University in St. Louis freshman Aly Coran and senior Paige Madara each received 2013 All-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors, as announced Thursday by the Association.
Coran received first-team all-UAA honors at No. 4 singles after posting a 3-0 record at the UAA Championship April 25-27. She was the only player not from UAA champion Emory University to be named to the all-association first team. Coran posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Simone Vandroff from Brandeis University to help the Bears rally for a 5-4 win in the quarterfinal round.
She also earned wins over Carnegie Mellon University’s Brooke Tsu (6-2, 6-0) in the semifinal and University of Chicago’s Kelsey McGillis (6-4, 6-3) in the third-place match. Coran has won her last 11 singles matches, and improved her record to 20-5 in her rookie season.
Madara was selected to the all-UAA second team at No. 6 singles after earning two wins at No. 5 singles and one at No. 6 at the UAA Championship. It marks Madara’s third all-UAA honor in her career after she was a first-team all-UAA selection at No. 6 singles and earned second-team all-UAA recognition at No. 3 doubles, both in 2011.
At the 2013 UAA Championship, Madara extended her singles unbeaten streak to eight matches with three straight-set wins. She earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Roberta Bergstein of Brandeis and a 6-4, 6-4 win over Carnegie Mellon’s Lydia Utkin at No. 5 singles. In the third-place match, Madara topped Chicago’s Stephanie Lee 7-5, 6-1 at No.6 singles. With the wins, Madara improved her season singles record to 18-7, and brought her overall career win total to 95.
Washington University finished fourth at the 2013 UAA Championship, marking its sixth top-four finish in head coach Kelly Stahlhuth’s eight seasons.
