Belleville, Ill., April 22, 2011 – The No. 15 Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team picked up a 5-4 win over the University of Rochester in the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship quarterfinals on Friday morning at the Kings Point Sports Club in Belleville, Ill.
The victory avenges a 5-4 loss the Bears suffered to Rochester in last year’s UAA quarterfinals in Cleveland, Ohio, and sets up a semifinal matchup between Washington University and No. 3 Emory University on Saturday, April 23, at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo., at 1:30 p.m.
Washington University and Rochester split the first two completed doubles matches on Friday, leaving the second doubles match to provide the crucial 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Sophomore Paige Madara and freshman Corinne Rauck beat Jamie Bow and Janice Zhao 8-2 to give Washington U. a 1-0 lead, but freshman Evelyn Qin and junior Natalie Tingir fell 8-5 to Lia Weiner and Frances Tseng in the No. 1 match.
