No. 16 Women's Tennis Defeats Kalamazoo College 8-1 on Saturday Morning

Belleville, Ill., March 5, 2011 – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team improved to 3-1 overall following an 8-1 victory over Kalamazoo College on Saturday morning at the Kings Pointe Racquet Club in Belleville, Ill.

The Bears swept the three doubles matches before moving on to take five of the six singles contests in straight sets. Four student-athletes picked up victories in singles and doubles action in the win. Kalamazoo falls to 1-3 on the year with the loss.

Junior Natalie Tingir teamed with sophomore Kate Klein to defeat Kari Larson and Kelsey Moran, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles, and Tingir was also a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Kelsey Hassevoort in top singles match.

Freshman Evelyn Qin and freshman Betsy Edershile were 8-2 victors over Jenna Riehl and Paula Silverman at second doubles. Edershile won 6-2, 6-0 over Moran at No. 3 singles while Qin beat Riehl 6-0, 6-1, in the fourth singles match.

Rounding out the doubles winners, freshman Corinne Rauck teamed with senior Elise Sambol to pick up an 8-3 win over Hassevoort and Kate Farwell at No. 3 doubles. Sambol was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Farwell in the fifth singles position and sophomore Paige Madara defeated Silverman, 6-1, 6-2, in sixth singles.

Saturday morning’s match was the final warm-up for the Bears before they embark on a difficult Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla. Washington University will compete in six matches over five days, including two contests against NCAA Central Region foes and a pair of matches against NCAA Division I programs.

The Bears begin their Spring Break competition on Sunday, March 13, when they face the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Orlando, Fla., at 1 p.m.
