Women's Tennis Defeats Berry College 8-1
Orlando, Fla., March 15, 2011 – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team improved to 3-0 during its 2011 Spring Break trip and 7-1 overall this year with an 8-1 victory over Berry College on Tuesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla.
The Bears swept doubles play before winning five of the six singles contests in straight sets. Freshmen Evelyn Qin and Betsy Edershile were 8-5 winners over Kendal Ruffner and Marina Lebrao in the No. 1 doubles match. Junior Natalie Tingir teamed with sophomore Kate Klein to defeat Caitlin Smith and Laura Cunningham, 8-0, at second doubles, while senior Elise Sambol and freshman Theresa Petraskova were 8-1 winners over Liz Stepp and Keri McGinnis at No. 3 doubles.
Klein, Petraskova and Sambol added victories in singles against Berry. Klein picked up a close straight-set win over Ruffner, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 2 match, Petraskova beat Cunningham 6-2, 6-3, and Sambol was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) winner over Smith at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Paige Madara and freshman Brittany Trimble rounded out the 8-1 win by picking up 6-0, 6-0 wins over Stepp and McGinnis in the No. 5 and 6 singles matches respectively.
Washington University will return to action for a pair of matches on Wednesday, March 16, in Orlando, Fla. The Bears will take on Division I Quinnipiac University at 12:30 p.m. (ET) and the University of Puget Sound at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
