Women's Tennis Competes in 2010 USTA/ITA Central Region Championships
RESULTS
St. Louis, Mo., October 5, 2010 – The Washington University in St. Louis women’s tennis team wrapped up competition in the 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championship on Sunday, Oct. 3, in St. Louis, Mo.
Washington University saw seven student-athletes advance to the third round of singles competition, but sophomore Kate Klein highlighted the Bears singles competitors by playing into the fourth round of action. Additionally, Washington University sophomore Brittany Trimble lost in the first round of the singles tournament, but advanced to the final of the consolation bracket before falling to Denison University’s Jane Lent in three sets.
In doubles action, WUSTL freshmen Betsy Edershile and Evelyn Qin capped off a successful team effort by playing all the way to the semifinal round. All five of the Bears’ doubles tandems advanced at least into the third round of competition, with Edershile and Qin picking up two additional victories.
Edershile, sophomore Katie Helfgot, freshman Corinne Rauck, junior Natalie Tingir, Qin and sophomore Paige Madara each joined Klein in the round of 32 in singles, but Klein picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over University of Chicago’s Chrissy Hu to advance into the round of 16.
Klein, who competed in the ITA semifinals last year, was unable to make a repeat trip to the quarterfinals, falling to Kenyon College’s Prita Kidder in a back-and-forth three-set decision, 0-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Trimble was impressive in her run to the consolation final, winning four-consecutive matches in straight sets. She beat Jenny Provost from Ohio Northern University and Wittenberg University’s Alex Cummings both by a score of 6-0, 6-0, and defeated Becky Mittler of Baldwin-Wallace College, 6-4, 6-2, and DePauw University’s Tricia Wilks, 6-2, 7-6.
Washington University had a pair of doubles teams compete in the quarterfinals, only they were pitted against one another, with Edershile and Qin defeating senior Alex Cassady and Rauck, 8-3, for a berth into the semifinals. There, Edershile and Qin fell to Chicago’s Linden Li and Carmen Vaca Guzman, 8-6, with Li and Vaca Guzman losing to teammates Kendra Higgins and Hu in an all-Chicago doubles final, 6-4, 6-3.
The Washington University women’s tennis team has concluded action for the fall of 2010, and will return to action for its spring season in early 2011. They are scheduled to face the University of Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Kings Point Racquet Club in Belleville, Ill., at 2 p.m.
