Nicole Martin Named to NSCAA Women’s Soccer Scholar All-America Third Team

SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA TEAM

St. Louis, Mo., December 17, 2012 – Washington University in St. Louis senior back Nicole Martin was named to the 2012 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Women’s Soccer College Scholar All-America Team, as announced Monday by the Association.

Martin, a third-team selection, was one of 39 student-athletes selected from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA. Martin has a 3.73 grade point average and will graduate in May with a degree in psychology and is planning to attend graduate school in the fall studying educational and cognitive psychology.

"Nicole Martin is a great leader and even better person, said Washington University head coach Jim Conlon. "The 2012 NSCAA College Scholar All-America award is so difficult to achieve because of the number of student-athletes eligible. Nicole put together an amazing season athletically and academically in 2012 after missing the entire 2011 season due to injury."

After missing her junior year with an injury, Martin started 21 of 22 matches as a senior and anchored a defense that recorded a single-season school record 11 shutouts. A first-team al-NSCAA All-Central Region and all-NSCAA University Athletic Association (UAA) honoree, she scored three goals and added a pair of assists for eight points.

Martin scored both goals in Washington U.’s 2-1 victory over No. 14 ranked Concordia-Moorhead Nov. 16 in the NCAA Sectional Semifinal, and added a tally in a 3-0 win at Rhodes College Sept. 22. A team captain as a senior, she started 42 of 47 career games played and was a three-time Academic All-UAA selection. Martin had three career goals and two assists for eight points.

Washington University completed the 2012 season with a school record 19-2-1 overall mark, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals for the sixth time in school history. The Bears also won their eighth UAA Championship with a 6-0-1 record. Washington U. was ranked No. 5 in the final NSCAA/Continental Tire and No. 6 in the D3Soccer.com Top-25 Polls.

Martin will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, to be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, in conjunction with the 2013 NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis.
