Toaspern's Goal Leads Bears Past No. 18 Case Western Reserve, 1-0

St. Louis, Mo., October 30, 2011 — The No. 17 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Case Western Reserve University on Sunday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
Freshman Lillie Toaspern scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute for the Bears. Senior Emma Brown sent a cross into the box that sophomore Jen Reed flicked to Toaspern, who one-timed it into the back of the net. Toaspern is tied for the team lead with Brown, sophomore Lauren Steimle and freshman Anna Zambricki with nine goals.
Prior to Sunday’s contest, Washington U. honored its eight senior members of the women’s soccer team who played their final regular season game at Francis Field: Brown, Natalie Callaghan, Lee Ann Felder, Mari Greenberg, Rachel Haas, Alyssa Marulli, Ashley Nault and Michelle Peterson.
Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques made five saves in the win as she picked up the 40th victory of her career. Jaques is the all-time wins leader at Washington University with a 40-15-5 overall record in three seasons.
With the win, Washington U. moved into a tie for second place in the UAA standings with Case Western Reserve with a 4-2 mark. Emory University claimed the UAA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 3-2 overtime victory over New York University on Sunday.
Washington University (14-4) plays its final regular season contest on Saturday, Nov. 5, at No. 23 ranked University of Chicago. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III Central Region Rankings, while Case Western Reserve is No. 2 in the Great Lakes Region … Washington University leads the all-time series with Case Western Reserve, 21-2, and the Bears have won the last 18 meetings … The assist for Brown was the 21st of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth on the all-time list.
