Lillie Toaspern’s Hat Trick Leads No. 17 Women’s Soccer Past Rochester 5-1

St. Louis, Mo., October 28, 2011 — Freshman forward Lillie Toaspern recorded the first hat trick of her career to lead the No. 17 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team to a 5-1 victory over the University of Rochester in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
The Bears fell behind for the sixth-straight contest after Kathryn Rowe scored in the second minute after firing a left-footed shot from 25 yards out. The goal for Rowe was her second of the season.
Washington U. would bounce back with a goal at 10:40 by Toaspern, who settled a ball and turned with a shot that went off the hands of Rochester goalkeeper Bridget Lang. Toaspern’s goal was her sixth of the season.
The game went to halftime tied at 1-1, but Washington U. put the game away with four goals in the opening 15 minutes of the second. Toapsern scored at 46:41 to give the Bears the lead for good, and then completed the hat trick after a give-and-go goal with senior Emma Brown. Toaspern now has eight goals in her rookie season on the Danforth Campus.
Sophomore Lauren Steimle scored at 54:14 off of a rebound, and then sophomore Jessica Johnson rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 60th minute to make it 5-1.
Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques picked up the 39th win of her career in the nets making seven saves. Washington U. outshot Rochester 20-16 and had a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Washington University (13-4, 3-2 UAA) plays its final home of the 2011 season on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m., against No. 18 ranked Case Western Reserve University. Prior to Sunday’s contest, Washington U. will honor its eight seniors on of the women’s soccer team.
