Mari Greenberg Scores Lone Goal in 3-1 Loss

Dubuque, Iowa, October 23, 2011 — No. 16 ranked Loras College scored three goals in the opening 17 minutes en route to a 3-1 win over the No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis women’s soccer team on Sunday afternoon at the Rock Bowl in Dubuque, Iowa.

Loras (14-2-1) struck first in the 13th minute of the game following a goal by Tonya Lohmeyer. Lohmeyer settled a cross from Madeline Tennant five yards outside the box, before ripping a shot past WU junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques to make it 1-0.

The Duhawks added a pair of goals in a 42-second plan to build a 3-0 lead just 17 minutes into the contest. An own goal by the Bears at 16:10 mark pushed the deficit to 2-0, and then Jessica Kern converted a penalty kick at 16:52 to make it 3-0.

Washington U. avoided the shutout following a goal by senior Mari Greenberg just before halftime. Greenberg corralled a loose ball in the box after junior Emily Gosche’s shot went off the post. The goal for Greenberg was her third of the season.

The Bears outshot Loras 19-7 and had a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. Jaques picked up the loss in goal making three saves.

Washington University (12-4, 2-2 UAA) returns to University Athletic Association (UAA) play at home against the University of Rochester on Friday, Oct. 28. Game time is set for 8 p.m. in St. Louis, Mo.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. head coach Jim Conlon is a 1998 graduate of Loras and played four seasons on the men’s soccer team … The Bears were playing without leading scorer Anna Zambricki for the fifth-straight game and starting midfielder Lee Ann Felder for the third-straight contest … The Bears have lost three of their last four games … Loras remains unbeaten at home with an 8-0-1 record.
