St. Louis, Mo., September 3, 2010 – Sophomore Hannah Buck fired a one-over 73 to claim medalist honors as the Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team captured the Maryville Fall Warm-Up Classic on Thursday at Aberdeen Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.
The Bears, who are in their third season as a varsity program and ranked No. 17 in the Division III Preseason Top-25 Poll, completed the 18-holes with a team score of 320. Rend Lake Community College was second with a 323, followed by host Maryville University (334), Lindenwood University (336), McKendree University (358) and Missouri Baptist University (395).
"We were really happy to get out play, even though it’s early in the season," said third-year head coach Sean Curtis. "The weather turned out to be great and we just let our games happen. We talked about relaxing and just playing the course."
Buck, a second-team All-American selection as a freshman, shot an even par 36 on the front and a one-over 37 on the back to claim individual honors by one stroke over Gabbi Schuerman of Rend Lake. Buck missed the tournament record by one stroke (72, set by Claudia Rojas of Lindenwood on Oct. 7, 2007).
"Hannah played very well and showed why she's been so successful," Curtis added. "She's very tough mentally and it came through today."
A pair of freshmen, Allyson Chee and Andi Hibbert, recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in their first collegiate tournament. Chee carded an 81 (42-39) to finish in a tie for fourth place, while Hibbert shot an 82 (41-41) to finish tied for eighth. Sophomore Melanie Walsh also had a top-15 finish, as tied for 13th with an 84 (41-43).
Freshman Marcy Koonce (46-43, 89, 22nd place), junior Katie Homa (46-44, 90, 23rd place) and senior Caroline Larose (59-57, 116, 37th place) also competed for the Bears.
