No. 3 Washington U. Women’s Golf Runs Away With Millikin Fall Classic Title
Decatur, Ill., September 22, 2013 – The No. 3 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team shot a season-low 306 on the final day to win the 2013 Millikin University Fall Classic held Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 21-22, in Decatur, Ill.
Washington U., which picked up its first tournament title of the season and 15th all-time, had four of its five starters break 80 on Sunday. The Bears won the team title with a two-day score of 621 (315-306), 50 strokes better than second place and No. 9 ranked Illinois Wesleyan University (342-329, 671). The team score of 621 was tied for the eighth lowest 36-hole score in school history.
John A. Logan Community College (354-324, 678), Millikin (357-329, 686) and Washington University B-Team (352-347, 699) rounded out the top five of the 15-team tournament.
Junior Olivia Lugar took home medalist honors after firing a two-day score of 149 (76-73). Lugar picks up her seventh all-time individual championship, second most in school history. She was first in the tournament field in birdies (seven), Par 4 scoring (3.94 (-1) and Par 5 scoring (4.91 (-1).
“This weekend was all about the short game. Especially today when I hit very few greens in regulation, I was able to score well because I got up and down from everywhere,” Lugar said. “It is always positive for the team to win, and we were able to put it together despite playing on two completely different courses without having practice rounds on either of them. It is a very positive note going into our next tournament in which we will be facing very strong competition.”
Freshman Xin Fang took home a second-place finish finishing five-strokes behind Lugar with a score of 154 (78-78). Fang, who has the team lead with a 78.50 average after the first three tournaments of the season, was first in the field in pars (24) and Par 5 scoring (4.91 (-1).
Senior Andrea Hibbert finished in fourth place with a two-day score of 159 (81-78), while freshman Samantha Han (80-80, 160) was fifth and sophomore Connie Zhou was eighth (83-79, 162). Han led the tournament field in Par 3 scoring with a 3.33 (+3) average.
Sophomore Erin Lawrence led the Washington U. B team with a 13th place finish with a two-day score of 168 (84-84). Also competing for the B team was graduate student Melanie Walsh (83-87, 170, 17th place), freshman Jessica Wibawa (91-83, 174, 22nd place), senior Allyson Chee (94-93, 187, 45th place) and junior Mackenzie Findlay (97-96, 193, 55th place).
Washington U. returns to action Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 28-29, at the DePauw University Classic in Greencastle, Ind.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. was first as a team in par 3 scoring (3.49), par 4 scoring (4.22) and par 5 scoring (5.25) … The Bears had a tournament-best 19 birdies and 101 pars as a team.
