Hannah Buck Claims Medalist Honors at Wartburg Fall Invite

Waverly, Iowa,September 12, 2010 – Sophomore Hannah Buck fired a school-record 72 and claimed medalist honors to lead the No. 17 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Wartburg College Fall Invitational on Sunday in Waverly, Iowa

Buck trailed Emily Swift of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire by two strokes entering the final day, but Buck’s even par 72 was enough to oust Swift, who shot an 80 to finish third. Freshman Andrea Hibbert shot a one-over 73 on day two and finished the 36-hole event in second place, with a two-day score of 156 (83-73, +13).
"Hannah played consistent all weekend and made putts today that other people missed," said third-year head coach Sean Curtis. "Andrea was solid all day and stayed focused the entire round. She had a great front nine and went to the back nine and had to finish what she started."
Washington University, who shot a 349 on day one to sit in fourth place, fired a 312 on day two to finish second as a team with a 36-hole score of 661. Third-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the 19-team event with a 648 (329-319). No. 2 ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (343-331, 674), No. 25 Carleton College (351-340, 691) and No. 14 Wartburg College (347-348, 695) rounded out the top five.
"The team likes the course and we like the layout and the way it fits our eye," added Curtis. "The conditions today were perfect and we took advantage of it.”
After being disqualified on Saturday after not turning in her scorecard, sophomore Melanie Walsh came up big for the Bears on day two and carded an 81. Freshmen Allyson Chee (93-86, 179, 30th place) and Marcy Koonce (94-86, 180, 32nd place) also turned in a solid performance as each shot an 86 on day two. Junior Katie Homa competed as an individual and shot a two-day score of 176 (90-86) to finish 25th. Chee, Koonce and Homa each shot 86 on the final day of competition.
The 18-hole team score of 312 was the second best in school history. Washington University shot a 306 (+18) on day two of the Wartburg Fall Invitational in 2009.
Washington University continues its fall season on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 18-19, at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
