Women’s Golf Second at DePauw Katman Classic After Day One

Danville, Ind., April 9, 2011 – The No. 5 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team shot an opening round 323 on Saturday to sit in a tied for second place after day one of the DePauw University Katman Classic held at Twin Bridges Golf Club in Danville, Ind.

No. 2 ranked and host DePauw University fired a 314 to take the team lead after 18 holes, while Washington University and No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan are tied for second with a 323. No. 22 Wittenberg University (325) and No. 20 Olivet College (326) round out the top five. DePauw’s Taylor Beaty leads the individual championship after an opening round 74 (36-38).

Sophomore Hannah Buck fired a 39 on both the front and the back nine to sit in a tie for second place with Katie Klosterman (38-40) of Illinois Wesleyan. Buck and Klosterman trail Beaty by four strokes entering the final day of play. Freshman Allyson Chee continued her consistent play, firing a career-best round of 80 (39-41) to sit in a tie for fifth place.

Another freshman, Andrea Hibbert, also had a nice round, as she rebounded from an opening nine 42 with a 39 on the back to tie for 11th place with an 81. Hibbert entered the day with an 81.07 average, and posted her 15th-consecutive round under 85.

Freshman Marcy Koonce (41-43, 84) and sophomore Melanie Walsh (40-44, 84) also fired rounds under 85, as Washington U. had all five golfers in the top 24.

The final round of the Katman Classic will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
