No. 3 Washington U. Women’s Golf Outlasts No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan in I55 Dual
Springfield, Ill., April 30, 2013 — The No. 3 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team outlasted No. 9 ranked Illinois Wesleyan University by eight strokes (317-325) in the I55 Dual Tuesday at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill.
Washington University had all five of its starters shoot 82 or lower, led by sophomore Olivia Lugar’s 18-hole score of 77 (+5). Lugar was third out of 12 golfers in the two-team field. Junior Andrea Hibbert was a stroke behind Lugar with a 78 (+4), good four fourth place. Hibbert birdied the 18th hole to shoot her third-straight 78.
The Bears swept the next three positions as freshman Connie Zhou (80, +8) and seniors Hannah Buck (82, +10) and Melanie Walsh finished fifth and tied for sixth, respectively. Walsh hit an approach shot on the final hole six inches from the cup, which led to a birdie. Freshman Erin Lawrence competed as an individual and fired an 83 (+11), good for eighth place.
Washington University concludes regular season play ranked No. 7 in the Golfstat team rankings with a 314.78 average. The Bears are seeking their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament bid, after placing 13th a year ago. The NCAA Tournament field will be announced Monday, May 6, at 5 p.m. (CT).
Bear Notebook: Hibbert was tied for first in Par 3 scoring (even), while Buck and Zhou tied for the lead in Par 5 scoring (even) … Buck and Hibbert led the field with three birdies each … As a team the Bears were first in Par 3 scoring (3.30, +6), Par 4 scoring (4.54 (+27) and Par 5 Scoring (5.30, +6).
