Bears Capture Millikin Spring Classic
RESULTS
Decatur, Ill., April 16, 2011 – The No. 5 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team concluded regular season play by capturing the 2011 Millikin University Spring Classic, held Friday-Saturday, April 15-16, at Scoville Golf Course in Decatur, Ill.
Saturday's final round was stopped during the middle due to weather. Tournament results are based on Friday's opening round.
Washington University finished 11 strokes ahead of second place Rend Lake College (344) and 21 strokes in front of third place Franklin College (354). Wheaton’s Casi Blanton shot a 79 (39-40) to win the individual title.
Last year’s one-two punch of sophomores Hannah Buck and Melanie Walsh led the Bears. Buck finished two shots off the individual lead in third place after an 81 (38-42). Walsh, who had the tournament lead at the turn after an opening 36 on the front nine, finished in a tie fourth place with an 83 (36-47).
Freshman Andrea Hibbert was one shot behind Walsh and tied seventh place with an 84 (39-45), while freshman Allyson Chee fired an 85 (43-42) to tie for 10th place. Freshman Marcy Koonce rounded out the Bears lineup with a 92 (42-50) to finish in 24th place.
Junior Katie Homa completed as an individual and tied for seventh place after an 84 (42-42).
Washington University, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III head-to-head rankings, will await word if they are selected to the 2011 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship, held Tuesday-Friday, May 10-13, at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The 19 teams and six individuals (106 participants total) will be announced on Monday, May 2, at 7 p.m., on www.ncaa.com.
