No. 2 Washington U. Women’s Golf Sixth at IWU Spring Fling
RESULTS
Normal, Ill., April 15, 2012 — The No. 2 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team struggled on day two of the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling and finished sixth out of 18 teams at the two-day tournament held at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
The final day of the tournament faced some very windy conditions and slick greens, which reflected in higher scores. The scoring average went up an average of 4.5 strokes on day two. Washington U. sat in fifth place after an opening round 324, but fired a 339 on day two to finish in sixth place with a total of 663.
Third-ranked DePauw University led from start to finish and won the team title with a two-day total of 634 (306-328). No. 4 Centre College (312-325, 637), No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (321-334, 655), No. 16 Birmingham Southern College (322-337, 659) and St. Mary’s College (325-335, 660) rounded out the top five.
Junior Hannah Buck took a one-stroke lead into the final round on Sunday, but her 85 on day two moved her into a tie for third place with a 159 (74-85). DePauw’s Taylor Beaty ran away with the individual title by four strokes after a two-day total of 152 (77-75). Beaty’s fired a 75 on day two, which was the top score out of 94 golfers.
Freshman Olivia Lugar rebounded from an opening round 81 to fire an 80 on day two to tie for 11th place with a two-day total of 161. Sophomore Andrea Hibbert tied for 31st place with a 169 (83-86) and sophomore Allyson Chee tied for 56th place (89-88, 177). Freshman Taylor Fagan fired an 86 on day one and played 11 holes on Sunday before suffering an injury.
Washington U. concludes regular-season play at the University of Illinois-Springfield Shootout on Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22, in Springfield, Ill.
