Buck Leads Women's Golf in Opening Round at Illinois Wesleyan
Normal, Ill., April 14, 2012 — Junior Hannah Buck fired an opening round 74 to lead the No. 2 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team on the opening day of the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling held at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
Third-ranked DePauw University leads the 18-team field after an opening round 306. No. 4 Centre College (312), No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (321), No. 16 Birmingham Southern College (322) and Washington U. (324) round out the top five.
Buck, who fired a school-record 69 on Sept. 17 on the same course, holds a one-stroke lead over Michelle Morris (75) of Birmingham Southern for the individual championship. Kelly Gaughan (DePauw), Paige Gooch (DePauw) and Morgan Zuleger (Carroll) all sit two shots back with a 76.
Buck was the lone players for Washington U. to crack the top-20 in the individual standings after day one. Freshman Olivia Lugar (81) is tied for 21st place, while sophomore Andrea Hibbert (83, 35th place), freshman Taylor Fagan (86, 57th place) and sophomore Allyson Chee (89, 68th place) round out the starting lineup for the Bears.
The final round of the IWU Spring Fling will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday. The shotgun start will begin at 9 a.m. with Washington U. being paired with Birmingham Southern and St. Mary’s.
Bear Notebook: Saturday marked the first time in Lugar’s career that she has shot in the 80s … The 18-hole score of 324 is the second highest round of the season by the Bears.
