No. 2 Women’s Golf Second at Phoenix Invitational
Peoria, Ariz., March 17, 2012 — No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis squandered a day one lead to fall by seven strokes to No. 7 George Fox University at the Phoenix Women’s Golf Invitational Tournament on Saturday at the Westbrook Village Golf Course in Peoria, Ariz.
Washington U. held a one-shot lead after the opening round on Friday, but George Fox fired a 299 on day two on the par-71, 5,980-yard course to claim the team title with a final score of 595. The Bears fired shot a 295 on day one and slipped to 307 on Saturday to finish with a team score of 602. No. 26 ranked St. Mary’s College (Ind.) shot a 331 on the first day but had to leave to catch their flight home before they could finish the entire round on the second day.
Freshman Olivia Lugar took home second place honors with a two-day total of two-over 144 (71-73). George Fox’s Kelcey Morrison ran away with the individual title shooting a six-under 136 (69-67).
Junior Hannah Buck (74-75, 149) and sophomore Andrea Hibbert (72-80, 152) also placed in the top-five with fourth and fifth places, respectively. Freshman Taylor Fagan (78-80, 158, eighth place) and sophomore Allyson Chee (84-79, 163, ninth place) rounded out the starting lineup for Washington U.
Also competing for the Bears as an individual was seniors Katie Homa (90-83, 173, 12th place) and Sarah Miller (96-88, 184, 13th place).
Washington University returns back to the Midwest to compete in the Northern Kentucky Spring Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, March 24-25, at the Perry Park Golf Course in Perry Park, Ky.
