No. 2 Washington U. Women’s Golf Second at Phoenix Invitational
RESULTS
Peoria, Ariz., March 16, 2013 — The No. 2 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team opened its spring season with a second-place finish at the Phoenix Invitational Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Westbrook Village Golf Course in Peoria, Ariz.
Washington U. fired a 36-hole score of 633 (322-311) and was 22 strokes behind team champion and host George Fox University. The No. 6 ranked Bruins finished 43-over on the par-71, 5,980-yard course with a two-day score of 611 (305-306), their second- straight tournament win and fifth of the season.
Rounding out the field was the University of Redlands with a 640 (320-323), No. 13 ranked Gustavus Adolphus College with a 656 (330-326) and St. Mary’s College with a 668 (346-322). The three teams that are not nationally ranked all received votes for the top 25 in the latest poll by Golf World and the National Golf Coaches Association.
“For our first time out this spring, we played pretty well this weekend. Everyone had a plan for what they wanted to do, it’s just not that easy to execute when you have not played outside,” said fifth-year head coach Sean Curtis. “I was encouraged with what I saw this weekend. This is the first step in the spring and a long way to go.”
Kelsey Morrison of George Fox took home medalist honors after shooting one-over-par each day to finish with a 144 (72-72). Washington U. sophomore Olivia Lugar was the top finisher for the Bears, placing fourth with a 153 (74-79).
Other top finishers for Washington U. was freshman Connie Zhou (77-80, 157), junior Andrea Hibbert (76-85, 161), senior Hannah Buck (84-78, 162) and senior Melanie Walsh (85-82, 177).
Competing as individuals for the Bears were sophomore MacKenzie Findlay (78-89, 167), junior Allyson Chee (85-88, 173) and freshman Erin Lawrence (90-83, 173).
Washington University returns to action Sunday-Monday, March 24-25, at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
