Women’s Golf Slips to Third at Golfweek Division III Fall Preview

RESULTS

Destin, Fla., October 15, 2012 — The No. 2 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team remained in contention after day two at the 2012 GolfWeek Division III Fall Preview held at the Baytowne Golf Club in Destin, Fla.

In a field that features of nine of the top-20 teams in NCAA Division III, Washington University shot a 316 on day two and sits 10 strokes out of first place with a two-day total of 625 (309-316). No. 8 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (305-310, 615) holds an eight-shot lead over second place and No. 1 ranked Methodist University (317-306, 623).

Rounding out the five is Washington University, No. 3 Centre College (325-315, 640) and No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan University (320-321, 641). Taylor O’Rear (74-75, 149) of Mary Hardin-Baylor holds a one shot lead in the individual standings.

Sophomore Olivia Lugar followed up an opening round 75 with the identical score on day two. Lugar sits in a tie for second place with a two-day total of 150. Lugar started slowly on day two and was +5 after five holes. She birdied the par-3 No. 7 and shot 41 on the front, before picking up four birdies on the back to shoot 34.

Senior Hannah Buck continued her consistent play with a 79 on day two and is tied for sixth place with a 156 (76-79). Buck birdied No. 9 to finish at even par 36 on the front, but struggled on the back with a triple bogey and four bogeys to shoot 43.

Freshman Connie Zhou started the day in 17th place after an opening round 81, but moved into the top-10 with a 78 on day two. Zhou sits in a eight-way tie for ninth place with a two-day total of 159.

Rounding out the starting lineup for Washington U. is junior Andrea Hibbert, who sits in a four-way tie for 20th place with a two-day total of 162 (77-85), and senior Melanie Walsh, who is tied for 49th place with a score of 174 (90-84).

Washington U. concludes play at the Golfweek Fall Preview on Tuesday with 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. (ET).

In a field that features of nine of the top-20 teams in NCAA Division III, Washington University shot a 309 on the opening day and sits just four shots shy of first place behind No. 8 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (305). No. 1 ranked and 15-time NCAA Division III national champion Methodist University (317), No. 10 Illinois Wesleyan University (320) and No. 3 Centre College (325) round out the top five.

Elizabeth David of Mary Hardin-Baylor has the overall lead in the individual standings after firing an even par 72 on day one. Brittany Levins of Illinois Wesleyan and Taylor O’Rear of Mary Hardin-Baylor are two shots back in a tie for second place with a 74.

Washington U. had three golfers finish in the top-seven on the opening day, led by sophomore Olivia Lugar’s three-over 75. Lugar is three shots back of the lead and sits in sole possession of fourth place. She shot a 40 on the opening nine with a triple bogey on the 153-yard par three seventh hole, but rebounded with a one-under 35 on the back with back-to-back birdies at No. 11 and No. 12.

“The weather was great today and the conditions were good,” said Lugar, who entered the day ranked No. 6 in Division III. “We went out there with confidence and played our games, and we enjoyed it. I think that’s where we are right now; playing great golf and having fun doing it.”

Senior Hannah Buck is a stroke behind Lugar in tie for fifth place after an opening round four-over 76. Buck fired a 38 on both the front and back nine, with birdies on No. 11 and No. 16.

“I think we all felt comfortable today on the course,” said Buck, a three-time All-American who is ranked No. 46 in Division III. “A great thing about a three-round tournament is there isn’t as much pressure on any one round. So we just went out and played our game.”

Junior Andrea Hibbert fired a five-over 77 on the opening day, and is in seventh place after the opening round. Hibbert, who entered the day ranked No. 54 in Division III, had an up and down day with eight pars, four birdies, four bogeys, double bogey and triple bogey. She rebounded after a 41 on the front with a pair of birdies at No. 15 and No. 17 for an even par 36 on the back.

Freshman Connie Zhou sits in a five-way tie for 17th place after an opening round nine-over 81 (39-42). Zhou, who is ranked No. 28 in Division III in her rookie season, was just five-over after 15 holes, but ended with double bogeys on No. 16 and No. 18. Senior Melanie Walsh rounded out the starting lineup for Washington U. with a 90 (44-46) and is in a tie for 54th place.

Washington U. continues play at the Golfweek Fall Preview on Monday with 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. (ET).
