John Patterson Named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Washington U.
St. Louis, Mo., August 7, 2013 – Washington University in St. Louis women’s basketball coach Nancy Fahey has announced the hiring of John Patterson as the program’s new full-time assistant coach.
Patterson takes on the new role after serving the previous three seasons as a part-time assistant coach for the Washington University men’s basketball program under head coach Mark Edwards.
Patterson replaces nine-year Washington U. veteran Bobbi Morse, who announced her retirement after 26 years of coaching college basketball.
"To get a chance to work with a coach as accomplished and respected as Coach Fahey is an opportunity that is second to none,” Patterson said. “My previous years within the Washington University Athletic Department has been extremely positive and I'm excited to get the opportunity to continue."
Over the past three seasons while on Edwards’ staff, the Bears posted a 54-26 (.675) record and won two University Athletic Association (UAA) championships and advanced to a pair of NCAA Tournaments. This past season, Washington U. posted a 21-7 overall mark and won the UAA Championship and made an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
“Coach Patterson has a great understanding of Washington University and the basketball programs. His coaching experience on the court and recruiting student-athletes for the past three years with the Washington University men’s program gives him a unique advantage,” said Fahey. “He has already proven to be a hardworking and knowledgeable coach and we look forward to him joining the women’s basketball family.”
Prior to arriving on the Danforth Campus, Patterson spent three seasons at Pattonville High School. He was the assistant junior varsity coach in 2007-08, before leading the junior varsity in 2008-09. During the 2009-10 season he served as the varsity assistant. Patterson also has experience on the club level, serving as travel coordinator of the Illinois Bears Basketball Club from 2008-10 and head coach of the 16U team in 2008-09 and the 17U team in 2009-10.
He received his associate of arts degree from John A. Logan College in 2004, and his bachelor’s degree in education from Fontbonne University in 2007. Patterson played four seasons of basketball at Carterville High School (Ill.) and was an all-state honorable mention basketball selection in 2001 and 2002. He went on to play two seasons at John A. Logan and one at Fontbonne.
