Washington University in St. Louis Head Coach Nancy Fahey to be Inducted into Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame on June 9
St. Louis, Mo., June 6, 2012 – Washington University in St. Louis head women’s basketball coach Nancy Fahey is one of six individuals who will be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2012 this weekend in Knoxville, Tenn.
Fahey, who will be the first coach or student-athlete from NCAA Division III to be inducted into the Hallf of Fame, will join Nikki McCray (player), Pamela McGee (player), Inge Nissen (player), Robin Roberts (contributor) and Dawn Staley (player) in the Class of 2012. This year’s six inductees will bring the total to just 127 individuals to be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame since the inaugural class in 1999.
In 26 seasons as Washington University’s head coach, Fahey has guided the Bears to an NCAA Division III-best five national championships, including four-straight crowns from 1998-2001. She has also led Washington U. to a Division III-record 10 Final Four appearances. Fahey has posted a 617-112 (.846 winning percentage) in her career with the Bears, including the second-longest winning streak in NCAA women’s basketball history at 81 games. This past season, she became the fastest coach in NCAA women’s basketball history to reach 600 wins, doing so in her 706th game.
The induction weekend festivities begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 8, with a private inductee welcome event, which will include the official unveiling of the Class of 2012 exhibits in the Hall of Honor. Each member of the Class of 2012 will receive a diamond WBHOF pin and a commemorative autographed basketball during a special presentation.
Saturday’s events begin at 8 a.m. with the Fourth Annual 4Kay Run/Walk, which is held in honor of the late Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer and North Carolina State coach Kay Yow who lost her battle with breast cancer in January of 2009. Proceeds from the race will benefit women’s cancer research through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Following the 4Kay Run/Walk Awards presentation, there will be an autograph session with the Class of 2012 in the WBHOF’s north rotunda at 10 a.m. The induction ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre and guests will be invited to attend a post-induction celebration and silent auction at the WBHOF at 9 p.m. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
