Twelve Players Score as Bears Earn 65-45 Win Over Northland
Lake Forest, Ill., November 18, 2011 – Twelve different players scored for the No. 7 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s basketball team as the Bears picked up a 65-45 win over Northland College at the Forester Tip-Off Tournament Saturday evening at the Lake Forest College Sports & Recreation Center in Lake Forest, Ill.
Senior Brianne Monahan scored the first basket of the game, and the Bears built an 18-point lead in the first 12 minutes of the game. After holding Northland without a basket for more than six minutes, a layup by senior Dani Hoover gave Washington U. a 24-6 with 8:54 left in the first half. The Bears extended their lead to as many as 21 points at 32-11 on a jumper by junior Kristin Anda with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, before heading to halftime with a 38-19 lead.
In the second half, Washinton U. used a 9-0 run during a six-minute stretch to take its largest lead of the game at 56-23 on a layup by senior Claire Schaeperkoetter with 9:34 remaining. Northland cut into the deficit but was unable to get any closer than 20 as the Bears earned the 65-45 win.
The Bears shot 42.6 percent from the field in the game, including 55.2 percent in the first half. Washington U. held Northland to 27.8-percent shooting in the game, including just four field goals in the first half. The Lumberjills finished 20-of-27 from the free-throw line in the game, while Washington U. was 11-of-17 on its free-throw attempts. The Bears had a 45-23 advantage rebounding, including 18 offensive rebounds to just two for Northland.
Monahan led the Bears with 10 points, while junior Annie Sayers chipped in eight. Anda and freshman Melissa Gilkey added seven points each. Schaeperkoetter posted team-highs of seven rebounds and four steals, and Anda pulled down six rebounds.
Washington U. improved to 2-0 with the win and Nancy Fahey moved within two wins of her 600th as the Bears’ head coach. Fahey has now compiled a 598-106 (.849) record in 26 seasons on the Danforth Campus.
The Bears will play host Laker Forest College in the Forester Tip-Off Tournament Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. in Lake Forest, Ill.
