Women’s Basketball Picked Second in UAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll

Rochester, N.Y., October 25, 2011 — The 2011 national runner-up Washington University in St. Louis women’s basketball team was picked second in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Defending conference champion University of Chicago was selected as the preseason favorite earning seven first-place votes to lead the 2011-12 coaches’ poll. The Maroons finished last season with a 14-0 record in Association play and a 25-4 overall record. Chicago is ranked second in the DIII News preseason poll.
Washington U., ranked No. 4 in the DIII News poll, received the remaining first-place vote. 26th-year head coach Nancy Fahey returns two starters and 14 letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a 25-6 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division III national championship game for the third-straight season and the ninth time in school history. Fahey enters the season with a 596-106 (.849) overall record and was named the 2011 D3hoops.com and WBCA Division III National Coach of the Year.
Preseason No. 11 ranked University of Rochester was third in the preseason coaches’ poll, followed by Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, Brandeis University, New York University and Carnegie Mellon University.
Washington University opens its 2011-12 season on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Mo., at 7 p.m. The Bears home opener is set for Saturday, Nov. 26, at 3 p.m., against Hendrix College.
