Volleyball Sweeps Concordia and No. 4 Eastern on Senior Night

St. Louis, Mo., October 28, 2011 — The No. 3 ranked Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team celebrated Senior Night by posting a pair of 3-0 victories over Concordia College (Ill.) and No. 4 Eastern University on Friday night at the Halloween Classic at the WU Field House in St. Louis, Mo.
Prior to Friday’s second contest, Washington U. honored its four seniors: Trisha Brandt, Lauren Budde, Brittany Mikottis and Kristen Thomas. During their four years on the Danforth Campus, the Bears posted an overall record of 128-16 (.889). They have helped the Bears to the 2008 University Athletic Association championship, three NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2009 NCAA Division III national championship.
Budde led Washington U. with 12 digs and hit .370 (12-2-27) in the 25-13, 25-11, 25-15 win against Concordia. Junior Drew Hargrave added nine kills, sophomore Meghan Byrne had eight, and junior Marilee Fisher dished out 37 assists. Junior Kelly Pang led the defensive effort with 16 digs. The Bears hit .330 (44-11-100) in the victory, including .452 in set one.
The Bears hit .346 (53-16-107) in the 25-18, 27-25, 25-23 victory over Eastern. The win for Washington U. was its 20th-straight at home, and snapped Eastern’s 21-match winning streak dating back to Sept. 10.
Hargrave (13 kills), Budde (10 kills, 10 digs) and Thomas (10 kills) each recorded double figures in kills for the Bears. Fisher dished out 45 assists in the win, and Pang added 20 digs. Washington U. hit .432 (20-4-37) in the third set as Washington U. notched its 27th win of the season.
Washington University (27-1) closes out regular season play on Saturday, Oct. 29, with a pair of home games in the Halloween Classic. The Bears take on Hanover College at 10 a.m., followed by a match-up against College of Mount St. Joseph at 2:30 p.m.
