Washington U.’s Melissa Gilkey’s All-America Finish Highlights Final Day of NCAA Outdoor Championships
La Crosse, Wis., May 25, 2013 – Sophomore Melissa Gilkey broke her own school record on the way to a third-place finish in the women’s javelin Saturday to help the Washington University in St. Louis women’s track & field team to a 12th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Gilkey’s third-place showing brought Washington U.’s point total to 20.5 points at the meet, good for 12th in the women’s team standings. It is the fourth-highest finish in school history, and marks the fifth top-15 finish in the past 16 years for the Bears.
Gilkey grabbed the last spot into the finals of the women’s javelin with a preliminary throw of 40.29 meters. On her first attempt in the finals, she unleashed a career-best and school-record throw of 44.24m to move from ninth place to third for All-America honors. The throw bettered Gilkey’s previous school record of 42.72m set at the 2013 UAA Championships. Gilkey also earned honorable mention All-America honors in women’s basketball for Washington U. this year.
Sophomore Drew Padgett closed the meet for the Washington University men Saturday evening. He came up just short of All-America honors, placing ninth in the men’s 5,000. Padgett clocked a time of 14:34.86, just .77 of a second behind the eighth-place finisher.
