Washington University’s Michael Burnstein Earns All-America Honors in 10,000m at NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Claremont, Calif., May 24, 2012 – Senior Michael Burnstein raced to All-America honors in the men’s 10,000-meter run for the third-straight year, leading the Washington University in St. Louis track and field teams on the opening day of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Thursday.

Burnstein clocked a time of 31:00.45 to finish eighth in the 10,000 and grab the final All-America honors in the event. He was one of 12 athletes in the race to clock a time faster than the previous stadium record. It marked Burnstein’s third-straight All-America finish in the 10,000m, as he placed seventh in 2010 and third in 2011.

In women’s action, seniors Elizabeth Phillips and Erica Jackey finished second and third in their preliminary heat of the 1,500 to advance to the event final. Phillips clocked a time of 4:40.03, while Jackey was third in the heat in 4:40.54. The event final for the women’s 1,500 is scheduled for 2:50 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.

Freshman Lucy Cheadle and senior Molly Wawrzyniak both grabbed spots in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase final by finishing fifth in their respective heats. Cheadle posted a time of 10:50.72, while Wawrzyniak clocked a time of 10:56.64. They will be among 14 runners competing in the 3,000 steeplechase final, which is set for 1:45 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.

Sophomore Shannon Howell recorded a time of 1:021.70 to finish 10th in the women’s 400 hurdle prelims on Thursday. She missed out on advancing to the nine-person final by just .25 of a second.

Four Washington University athletes will be in action on the second day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Jasmine Williams competes in the women’s high jump at 2:15 p.m. (PT), while senior Justin Pieper competes in the men’s high jump at 5:45. On the track, senior Tyler Jackson races in the prelims of the men’s 110 hurdles at 5:25, while Jackey is set to run in the women’s 800 prelim at 7:10.
