Senior Molly Schlamb Breaks WUSTL 1,500-Meter Record
Naperville, Ill., May 21, 2010 –Senior Molly Schlamb of the Washington University in St. Louis women’s outdoor track and field team broke the school record in the 1,500-meter run at the North Central College Gregory Invitational on Friday, May 21, in Naperville, Ill.
Members of the Bears’ men’s and women’s outdoor track teams were competing at the Gregory as one final warm-up before the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, set to begin next week in Berea, Ohio.
Schlamb bested sophomore Liz Phillips’ record in the 1,500, which was set just last week on the same track. Schlamb submitted a time of 4:28.16, automatically qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Championships in the process, and eclipsing Phillips’ record-setting mark of 4:28.90. Her performance on Friday ranks as the third fastest 1,500 time in Division III this season.
Phillips turned in an impressive 800-meter time at the Gregory Invitational, greatly improving her chances of qualifying to compete in the event at the NCAA’s. She finished fifth overall in the 800 with a time of 2:11.33, falling just 0.33 shy of meeting the automatic NCAA qualification standards and also improving on her previous season-best mark of 2:12.90.
