Eight Top-Five Finishes Highlight Washington U. Track & Field Performances at NCC Gregory Invitational
Naperville, Ill., May 18, 2012 – The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s track & field teams posted eight top-5 finishes at the Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central College on Thursday and Friday.
Junior Anne Diaz-Arrastia placed in two events to lead the way for the Washington U. women. She recorded a career-best leap of 5.65 meters to finish fifth in the long jump. The mark moved Diaz-Arrastia into second on the Washington University all-time career list. She added a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 11.79m.
Sophomore Anna Etherington was the lone event champion for WU at the meet, tying for first in the women’s pole vault with a mark of 3.82m. Freshman Claire Simons and sophomore Moira Killoran tied for fifth with clearances of 3.27m.
Sophomore Shannon Howell and freshman Melissa Gilkey each posted runner-up finishes for the WU women at the Gregory Invite. Howell clocked a time of 1:02.54 to place second in the 400-meter hurdles, while Gilkey was second in the javelin with a throw of 38.88m.
Freshman Nicholas Alaniva was the top finisher for the Washington U. men. He cleared a season-best height of 4.48m to tie for fifth in the men’s pole vault. Junior Ryan Doll finished eighth in the 200 with a time of 22.05.
The Washington University track & field teams will await the official announcement of qualifiers for the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships to be made on Sunday, May 20, on ncaa.com. The NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships are scheduled to be held on Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26 in Claremont, Calif.
