Dan Davis Sets 110-Hurdle Automatic Qualifier at WUSTL Select Meet

St. Louis, Mo., April 9, 2011 — Washington University in St. Louis men’s outdoor track and field junior Dan Davis set an automatic qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles at the Washington University Select Meet on Saturday afternoon at the Bushyhead Track in St. Louis, Mo.

The Washington U. women’s team finished first out of five school in the team standings, tallying 158 points, while the men’s team finished second with 141 points, behind Central College’s team score of 179 points.

Davis’ impressive time of 14.34 in the 110-meter hurdles was not only a 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship automatic qualifier, but it was just 0.01 shy of tying the Washington University school record. Classmate Tyler Jackson was the runner-up in the 110-hurdles with a time of 14.67, a provisional NCAA qualifier. Jackson also won the 400-meter hurdles (57.50) at the WUSTL Select.

The women’s team featured five individual event winners on Saturday with the Bears posting their top finishes in the distance events. Senior Taryn Surtees won the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:48.05 and junior Molly Wawrzyniak posted a first-place time of 11:33.76 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Freshman Gabby Reuveni finished first in the 3,000-meter (11:25.69) and junior Liz Phillips earned the top spot in the 800-meter with a mark of 2:15.03. Freshman Anna Etherington rounded out the women’s first-place finishes with a height of 3.40 meters.

On the men’s side, freshman Justin Pieper cleared 1.83 meters to take first in the high jump and freshman Justin Rodriguez won the 3,000-meter in 9:08.29. Senior Chris Malaya posted an impressive second-place time of 48.63 in the 400-meter, just 0.13 off the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

The Washington University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams return to action on Friday, April 15, for the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Twilight Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., at 5 p.m. (ET).
