Ben Harmon and Anne Diaz-Arrastia Earn UAA Outdoor Honors
UAA OUTDOOR HONORS
St. Louis, Mo., April 29, 2010 – Junior Ben Harmon of the Washington University in St. Louis men’s outdoor track and field team has been tabbed as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championship Men’s Most Outstanding Performer in the Field Events and freshman Anne Diaz-Arrastia was named the UAA Outdoor Women’s Rookie of the Year, as announced by the association.
Additionally, head coach Jeff Stiles and his staff of Lane Lohr, Doug Beattie, Jamie Kootz, Seth Kelly, Ryan McDonald, Justin McKnight, Gena Melick, Brian Miller and Aubrey Edwards were selected as the UAA Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year, after leading the Washington U. men’s outdoor track and field team to its second-straight outdoor UAA Championship last weekend in St. Louis, Mo.
It is the second time in as many years Stiles and his staff have garnered UAA Outdoor Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year accolades.
Harmon repeats as the UAA Most Outstanding Performer at the conference outdoor meet after garnering four top-four finishes in field events including two UAA individual championships last weekend.
Harmon, who automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor championship in the decathlon earlier this season, won the high jump (1.95 meters) and the long jump (6.94 meters), also placing second in the pole vault (4.40 meters) and fourth in the triple jump (13.87 meters).
Diaz-Arrastia turned in two of her most impressive performances of the season, winning the long jump and the triple jump at the UAA outdoors. Both of her marks were NCAA Division III outdoor championship provisional cuts and her first-place distance of 11.92 meters in the triple jump currently ranks third among all performances in Division III this season.
She also ran on the Bears’ fifth-place 4x100-meter relay (51.79) and sixth-place 4x400-meter relay (4:24.39) teams.
The Washington University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams return to action on Saturday, May 1, when they will compete at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.
