WUSTL Women Finish Sixth at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
RESULTS
Naperville, Ill., March 9, 2013 – The four qualifiers for the Washington University in St. Louis women’s track & field team earned All-America finishes in all five events in which they competed to help the Bears to a sixth-place finish in the team standings at the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships held Friday-Saturday, March 8-9, at North Central College.
Washington U. scored 20.5 to finish sixth in the team standings, the third-highest finish in school history. It marked the fifth time the Bears finished in the top 10 at the Indoor Championships, and was the third-highest point total Washington U. has ever produced at the Indoor Championships. University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the team title with 56 points, while Illinois College (32), University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (27), Wartburg College (25) and Monmouth College (24) finished second through fifth, respectively.
Fresh off her first-career All-America honors (fourth place) in the pentathlon Friday, senior Anne Diaz-Arrastia posted a career-best leap of 11.77m to place sixth in the triple jump Saturday afternoon. Diaz-Arrastia recorded three jumps that were better than her previous career-best of 11.61m. She advanced to the triple jump final in sixth with a leap of 11.67m, then solidified her placement with the 11.77m jump on the first attempt of finals. The mark was 16 centimeters better than her previous career long, and ranks second on Washington U.’s all-time career leaderboard.
Freshman Emily Warner clocked a time of 2:13.31 to finish fifth in the 800 Saturday afternoon and earn the first All-America honors of her career. Five of the eight finalists in the event were seniors, including all four runners who finished ahead of Warner.
Sophomore Lucy Cheadle picked up All-America honors in the 5,000 for the second year in a row. She ran a time of 17:05.29, just one second shy of her school record, to place fifth in the event. Cheadle finished sixth in the event at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 17:19.65.
Junior Anna Etherington also earned All-America honors for Washington U. over the weekend. She tied for fourth in the pole vault Friday evening.
The Washington University track & field teams have two weeks off before beginning their outdoor seasons by hosting the WUSTL Mini Meet Friday, March 22, at Bushyhead Track.
