Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams Place Fifth at Bob Keck Invitational

Bloomington, Ill., February 5, 2011 — The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams each place fifth overall at the Illinois Wesleyan University Bob Keck Invitational, held Friday-Saturday, Feb. 4-5, in Bloomington, Ill.
The weekend was highlighted by senior Ben Harmon’s performance in the Bob Keck Pentathlon on Friday evening. Harmon finished first with a final score of 3,634 points, which is a provisional qualifying score for the 2011 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. Harmon’s tally ranks first among five NCAA provisional qualifiers nationally through this weekend’s competition. Harmon earned All-America honors in the pentathlon in 2009, when he placed third at the NCAA meet.
Harmon placed first among the 17 pentathlon competitors at the Bob Keck in the high jump and long jump, recording marks of 1.94 meters and 6.77 meters respectively. He also ran the 1,000-meter in 2:44.97, the 55-hurdles in 8.15, and registered a distance of 10.15 in the shot put.
For the WUSTL women’s team, junior Liz Phillips enjoyed another strong meet. She won the mile with a time of 5:05.74, just 1.74 seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifying mark, and also placed fifth in the 800-meter with a Washington University season-best time of 2:17.56.
Freshman Sarah Fisher won the 3,000-meter, finishing in 10:32.73, and freshman Anna Etherington finished first in the pole vault with a personal best height of 5.50 meters, only 0.05 meters away from the NCAA qualifying standard.
For the men’s team, junior Dan Davis grabbed the top finish in the 55-hurdles (7.61) and was also the runner-up in the 200-meter (22.78). Freshman Paul Garcia finished third in the mile (4:20.18) and the men’s distance medley relay team of freshman Arthur Townsend, junior Matt Rickard, junior Matt Schwab and senior Alden Black grabbed second place with a time of 10:23.81.
The Washington University men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams return to action next weekend for the Monmouth College Fighting Scot Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 12, in Monmouth, Ill., starting at 12 p.m.
