Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Teams Fall to Saint Louis University
RESULTS
St. Louis, Mo., September 30, 2011 — The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted NCAA Division I Saint Louis University in its 2011-2012 season opener on Friday night at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo. The Billikens picked up a 143-96 victory in the men’s contest and won the women’s head-to-head 152-87.
The WUSTL women’s team saw strong performances out of a pair of relay teams while the men’s team had a pair of freshmen turn in strong individual swims.
Freshman Luke Dobben won the men’s 1,000-yard race with a time of 10:03.42, defeating senior Chris Valach who was the runner-up with a mark of 10:11.74.
First-year swimmer Zane Turpin won the men’s 500-yard freestyle (4:49.96) and was also the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly (53.21). Sophomore Jason Wan took first in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 55.26.
The Washington University women’s squad posted first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays. Sophomore Chi Pham, senior Catherine Rafferty-Millett, junior Meghan Powers and sophomore Allison Siegel comprised the winning 200-medley team (1:52.12).
Freshman Jennifer Tartavull, sophomore Paige VanTassell, sophomore Katie Bush and junior Veronica Tse posted a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:42.75) and Tartavull added an individual victory in the 100-yard freestyle (55.16).
The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, for the University of Missouri Show-Me Showdown in Columbia, Mo., starting at 6 p.m.
