Swimming and Diving Teams Return to Action Against SIU, Lindenwood

St. Louis, Mo., January 7, 2011 — The Washington University in St. Louis men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams returned to action after their winter break hiatus to compete against Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Lindenwood University on Friday, Jan. 7, at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo.
Both the WUSTL men’s and women’s team captured an event win in the three-team meet on Friday night. For the Washington U. men’s squad, junior Chris Valach won the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:57.69) and for the women’s team freshman Chi Pham was victorious in the 400-yard individual medley (4:41.51).
Pham also finished second in the women’s 100-yard backstroke (1:01.09) and teamed with senior Catherine Rafferty-Millett, sophomore Meghan Powers and freshman Allison Siegel to capture second in the 400-medley relay (4:08.67).
Freshman Grace Murray finished second in the women’s 1,000-freestyle (10:59.90), junior Amy Vanlishout was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.36), freshman Connie Shao came in second in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Siegel garnering second-place showings in the 50-yard freestyle (25.15) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.90).
On the men’s side, senior David Chao swam to a pair of second-place finishes in sprint freestyle events, as the runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.58 and the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 47.02. Senior Kartik Anjur placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 53.30.
The Washington University men’s swimming and diving team returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 12, when it hosts Wabash College at the Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Mo., at 7 p.m. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in competition next weekend for the Washington University Invitational.
