Washington U. Softball Takes on No. 12 Coe Thursday in Pella, Iowa

St. Louis, Mo., May 6, 2013 — The Washington University in St. Louis softball team received an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Championship, as announced Monday by the NCAA Softball Committee. The Bears will play in the eight-team Midwest Regional Thursday-Monday, May 9-13, at Central College in Pella, Iowa.
The fifth-seeded Bears, who finished the regular season with a 30-12 overall record, take on No. 4 seed Coe College (32-6) Thursday at Noon. Coe received an at-large bid after falling in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) title game to Luther College. The two teams have met just once in the NCAA Tournament, a 7-0 victory by Coe on May 10, 2008. Coe leads the all-time series between the two teams 6-5.
Top-seeded University of St. Thomas (37-5) takes on No. 8 seed Bethany Lutheran College (23-18) in the opening game Thursday at 10 a.m., with Washington U. and Coe to follow at Noon. No. 3 seed Fontbonne University (33-10) and No. 6 seed Augustana College (29-12) meet at 2 p.m., followed by No. 2 seed and host Central College (28-8) and No. 7 seed Cornell College (22-14) in the final game of the day at 4 p.m.
Four of the eight teams in the regional have won at least 30 games, while St. Thomas (No. 8), Coe (No. 12), Central (No. 16) and Fontbonne (No. 23) are all ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) top-25 poll.
Washington U. made 10-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament from 2002-11, and owns an all-time postseason record of 22-20 (.524). The Bears won the school’s lone Regional Championship in 2007, and advanced to the College World Series before falling in the national championship game.
