Ashley Janssen and Kelsey Neal Named to 2013 Capital One Academic All-District Team
ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM
St. Louis, Mo., May 3, 2013 – Washington University in St. Louis senior outfielder Ashley Janssen and junior designated player Kelsey Neal earned 2013 Capital One First-Team Academic All-District Five Division III Softball honors, as announced Friday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Janssen, a second-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honoree, has emerged as the one of the top leadoff hitters in the conference with a .453 batting average. She has recorded 19 multiple-hit games this season, and has reached base in 33-consecutive games. Janssen ranks in the top-three in the conference in five offensive categories: second in walks (21), hits (63), batting average (.453) and on-base percentage (.522) and third in runs scored (39).
A two-time first-team Capital One Academic All-District and three-time Academic All-UAA selection, Janssen has a 3.87 grade point average while majoring in neuroscience.
Neal, a first-team all-UAA honoree, is the top offensive player for Washington University this season while starting all 42 games. She is batting .368 with 15 doubles, eight home runs and 54 RBIs. Neal ranks in the top-10 in the UAA in six offensive categories – leading the league in doubles (15) and RBIs (54), second in sacrifice flies (four) and total bases (89), fourth in slugging percentage (.654) and fifth in home runs (eight).
On the mound, Neal has a 13-7 overall record and a 3.22 earned run average. She ranks third in the UAA in wins (13), fourth in strikeouts (87) and fifth in innings pitched (108.2). A two-time first-team Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-UAA selection, Neal has a 3.87 grade point average while majoring in economics. She was also a Capital One Third-Team Academic All-America honoree in 2012.
In order to be selected to an Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing. As First-Team Academic All-District Team selections, Janssen and Neal will be among the nominees for the Academic All-America Team, which will be announced Tuesday, May 21.
