St. Louis, Mo., March 19, 2011 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team splits a pair of games on day one at the 2011 Washington University Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis, Mo.
The Bears opened tournament play with a 1-0 eight-inning victory over Fontbonne University, and then suffered a 4-0 loss to No. 19 ranked Coe College in the second game.
Senior pitcher Claire Voris had a season-high 14 strikeouts in the extra-inning victory over the Griffins. Junior Alyssa Abramoski had two of the four hits for Washington U., including the game-winning hit in the eighth inning.
Junior Rebecca Salisbury was placed on second base in the eighth inning for the Bears, due to the international tiebreaker rule. With one out in the eighth, Abramoski doubled to right center field to break the tie.
Coe (11-2) broke open a 0-0 tie with four runs with two outs in the top of the fourth inning in game two. WUSTL starter Olivia Cook retired the first two batters, but a single from Ashley Flannagan and back-to-back doubles from Brandi Haight and Shannon Aquero made it 2-0. An error by Voris at third base allowed a third run to score, and then a double by Maggie Wettstein pushed across the second unearned run of the game.
Cook took the loss on the mound for Washington University, falling to 4-2 overall. She allowed five hits and two earned runs in the loss, and had six strikeouts and just one walk. The Bears were limited to just four hits in the loss to Coe.
