Mullen and Santos Lead #23 Softball Past Manhattanville, 17-0

Clermont, Fla., March 11, 2012 – The bats came alive for the No. 23 ranked Washington University in St. Louis softball team in a 17-0 win over Manhattanville College on Sunday morning at the NTC Games in Clermont, Fla. Washington U.’s second game of the day against No. 18 Ithaca College was cancelled due to rain.
Sophomore Maggie Mullen was 3-for-4 with a homerun and four RBIs, while senior Corissa Santos was 2-for-2 with two walks, a homerun and five RBIs. The Bears recorded 10 hits in the win.
Junior Kathy Peter (1-0) tossed a complete-game shutout for the Bears on the mound, allowing three hits while striking out three and walking five. The victory for Peter was the 10th of her career, improving her all-time mark to 10-1.
The Bears struck first in the second inning as Mullen tripled and then scored on a passed ball. Washington U. pushed across four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Santos.
Washington U. put the game out of reach by scoring 12 runs on five hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitch in the fourth inning. Rain fell for most of the fourth inning and the Bears took advantage of it. Santos drove in a run with an RBI double, junior Alex Fjeldheim added a two RBI double and Mullen had a deep three-run home run to left in the 12-run inning for the Bears.
Washington University (6-1) has a day off in Florida before opening play at the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Tuesday, March 13, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Bears take on the University of Rochester at 10 a.m. (ET) and Case Western Reserve University at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
Bear Notebook: The homerun for Santos was her 14th of her career, tying Laura Andréa (2005-08) for seventh in school history … Mullen’s homerun moved her into 10th on the all-time list with 12.
