Franklin and Chu Fall in ITA Regional Doubles Championship Match
RESULTS
St. Louis, Mo., September 25, 2011 — Sophomore Max Franklin and freshman Kevin Chu picked up second-place honors in doubles to highlight the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team on Sunday at the 2011 USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Franklin and Chu dropped a 1-6, 7-5, 7-10 decision to No. 6 seed Sam Miles and Ben Kopecky of DePauw University on Sunday in the final match of the day. The duo fell behind 6-1, 5-1, before mounting a comeback with three-straight breaks to force a super-tiebreaker for the third set.
Franklin and Chu ousted three ranked teams en route to the championship match, including No. 11 seed and teammates in junior Adam Putterman and freshman Ross Putterman in the semifinals, 9-7.
Adam Putterman was one of three Bears who advanced to the quarterfinals in singles. Putterman, the No. 9 seed, defeated No. 1 seed Paul Burgin (Kenyon) and No. 13 seed Sam Miles (6-2, 6-2) on Sunday to advance to the championship match.
Adam Putterman and No. 16 seed C.J. Williams of Kenyon College take the court on Monday at 10 a.m., in the USTA/ITA Singles Championship match. The match will be broadcast live on Bears TV at: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/wustl.portal#
Ross Putterman made an appearance in the semifinals as the No. 18 seed before falling to Williams, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, in Sunday’s match. Junior Gary Parizher, the No. 11 seed, also advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Ross Putterman, 6-1, 7-5.
In the St. Louis Collegiate Singles draw, sophomore Jeffrey Hirsh defeated freshman teammate Connor Mulhall 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. With the win, Hirsh gains an automatic bid to the 2012 USTA/ITA Central Regional.
Sophomore Tim Noack and freshman Eric Ziska had a nice showing in the St. Louis Collegiate Doubles back draw, falling in the final, 9-7.
