St. Louis, Mo., May 6, 2013 — The No. 10 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team will host the Central Regional of the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 10-12, at the Tao Tennis Center in St. Louis. This marks the fifth time in the last six seasons Washington U. has hosted regional action.
“The guys are really looking forward to the NCAA Tournament. That is just an added bonus that we get to start here on the Danforth campus,” said 12th-year head coach Roger Follmer.
The Bears, who are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th-straight season, received an automatic bid after upsetting then No. 3 ranked Emory University, 5-4, in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship April 28 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
No. 4 seed Kalamazoo College (9-12) and No. 5 seed Grinnell College (22-11) will meet Friday in the lone match of the day, with the winner facing top-seeded Washington University Saturday. No. 2 seed Coe College (31-1) squares off with No. 3 seed Earlham College (19-2) Saturday in the second round.
Washington University is making its 17th NCAA appearance, and 14th as a Division III institution. Washington U. has an overall record of 26-16 (.619) in 14 trips to the NCAA Division III tournament, and is seeking its sixth-straight Final Four appearance.
Washington U. is one of three UAA squads selected for the NCAA Championship. Emory received an at-large bid and will host regional play in Atlanta, while Case Western Reserve University also received an at-large bid and will play at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
Kalamazoo will host the team championship finals, which will be held Saturday-Monday, May 20-22, at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 8.
