Bears Defeat NAIA No. 20 McKendree For Second-Straight Victory
Belleville, Ill., February 12, 2011 – Playing its third ranked team in seven days, the No. 6 ranked Washington University in St. Louis men’s tennis team defeated NAIA No. 20 ranked McKendree University, 7-2, on Saturday night at Kings Point Racquet Club in Belleville, Ill.
Washington University, which picked up its second-straight victory, improved to 2-1 overall, while McKendree dropped to 0-1 after playing its season-opener against the Bears.
Washington U. returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. (ET), against No. 9 ranked North Carolina Wesleyan University in the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championship held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. Seven of the top 10 ranked teams in Division III will compete in the event.
Washington University swept doubles play for the first time this season and 13th in the last two years. Seniors Isaac Stein and Max Woods won at No. 1 (9-7), junior Cameron Chiang and sophomore Kareem Farah posted an 8-4 victory at No. 2, and sophomore Adam Putterman and freshman Max Franklin won at No. 3, 9-7
The Bears won four of six singles matches in straight sets as Washington U. defeated McKendree for the 10th-straight season. Woods (No. 2, 6-3, 6-2), sophomore Bryan Haywood (No. 4, 6-1, 6-2), freshman Tim Noack (No. 5, 6-2, 6-4) and senior David Zhu (No. 6, 6-3, 6-2) each posted singles wins for the Bears. Zhu clinched the team victory for Washington U. with his victory at No. 6 singles.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. is 2-1 against ranked teams this year … Noack improved his 2010-11 singles record to 10-0 … Stein picked up career win number 130, becoming just the seventh player in school history to achieve the feat.
